Life couldn't be better. The only thing that bothered me was that what existed between Mauricio and me would someday come to an end. Yes, every beginning has an end, but that end is actually the beginning of a new story. I knew that, in the beginning, while we were living in Madrid, Mauricio was involved with other girls. It wasn't a secret to me, nor was it a problem, because besides the fact that I had that same freedom (which I never exercised), we had sex every day, and it was only that which bound us. That's what I wanted to believe, what I wanted to accept. Just sex. Sometimes he would come home with the smell of cheap perfume and a look on his face like he had paid for sex. I never understood how someone could pay for sex, I suppose men are like that. On two occasions, I had bad thoughts. The first was when I saw marks on his neck, a sign that some bitch was marking her territory. Of course, I left marks all over his body. The second occasion was when I caught him masturbating while talking on the phone. When I asked, he simply replied,

—It's a hotline, babe.

—That's so last century.

—It's not so much about hearing nonsense, but about the voids.

—Do you have a void?

—I mean that you only listen to the story. Perhaps on the other end of the line, an overweight woman is eating a McDonald's hamburger while trying to convince me that she's a supermodel with a desire to lick my dick.

—If you say so.

—It's a game, just a game.

He was right. Besides, things were very clear from the beginning. I've always liked to be straightforward. This way, if the other person suffers, it's at their own risk because it was their decision. I never lied. If he believed otherwise, that was his decision. And yes, weeks after we parted ways, I found out that he fell into depression. In his mind, he had fabricated a story where we would have a house with white fences, a dog, and two children.

Falling into that state was his decision, and mine was to speak to him with the truth. The same thing happened with Mauricio, he was always clear, and as long as he didn't change what he had said about us being only sexual accomplices, I had no reason to make up stories or create illusions. The decision to accept or suffer was entirely up to me, and I had decided to accept.

Upon arriving in Italy with an endless bank account, things changed a bit.
